Multiple exclusive interviews with those who are on the front lines of the Oxford tragedy.
The Oxford community wants answers. They want those responsible to be held accountable. They want the kids to feel safe again. The tragic shooting of 11 people at Oxford high school last week has shattered the school year for teachers, students, the staff and their families. Four students are dead. There will be no senior trip, senior prom, or walk across the stage to receive diplomas for them. The entire school community will never be the same. As we mourn the loss of those taken too young and those survivors who will long be suffering some critics are saying it is too soon to be filing lawsuits, that there is plenty of time for that after we have a chance to heal. That might be true and I would agree completely if we could trust that all those with information would be 100% transparent with what happened. We do not have those assurances. The Attorney general offered to use state money and state resources to do an independent investigation but the school district decided to hire their own firm at their own expense to investigate. The Attorney general saying she hopes it is not a move to buy protection from liability. The truth is we have no reason to believe we will get the entire truth from anyone as everyone positions themselves to shield themselves from blame. When a lawsuit is filed the court orders the parties involved to turn over discovery that will include all kinds of documents and detailed information that will help the community get to the truth behind the tragedy. Those with information will be made to tell what they know under oath and under the threat of perjury. Sometimes lawsuits appear unseemly, but often are necessary to bring the truth out that ultimately can help those suffering find closure. The more light on the issue, the best chance we have to find the truth.
