4 students died in the school shooting
My friends nephew was killed in the Oxford High School shooting. Seeing the devastation of a mass shooting so close to home is heartbreaking. I have covered similar acts of terror around the country but students shot and killed in cold blood 25 miles from my house is overwhelming. We are now realizing red flags were missed. People knew in advance this was a possibility and they did not act. The shooter is in jail and will likely spend the rest of his life there. He is only 15 so we are talking seven or eight decades behind bars. His parents are locked up as well. After hearing they would be charged with involuntary manslaughter for failing to secure the weapon, they fled. Police arrested them after finding them hidden in a warehouse near the Canadian border with $ 4,000.00 in their pockets. The dad bought the weapon 4 days prior to the shooting, possibly a Christmas present for his son. His son allegedly had violent drawings in a journal and made a video the night before the shooting saying he would bring a gun to school and shoot as many people as possible. One teacher and Ten students were shot, 4 of the students died. The community deserves time to mourn but a thorough investigation must take place. Instead of Oxford High School being on a list of deadly School shootings, it can become the school shooting that put an end to or vastly diminishes future school shootings. It would take a bold effort to look at a number of issues from bullying to mental health, gun control safety measures to a new culture of speaking up and providing help for troubled kids. It would take a massive effort by all of us to help solve the problem of school shootings in America, but if not us, then who?
